Thierry Simões

The new exhibition by Thierry Simões is composed by drawings produced between 1990 and 2012.

The title refers to the design of the letter itself, to a superposition of two vertices, of two drawings in the same plane, of two layers of time in the same space. The artist shows a series of works made in different moments and now connected by a kind of web.

In these drawings, there are several layers, stains, rips, cuts, transparencies and opacities. There can be seen the diversity of materials (paper, fabric, wood), techniques (pencil, India ink, pastel, gouache, watercolour, encaustic, graphite, wax) and practices (to draw, cut, overlap, sand, spray, dip) who live together in the artistic process of Thierry Simões.

The exhibition now presented reveals the foundations of his practice: the drawing is seen as something happening that can be continued, something that does not have a clear beginning or an end. The drawing is so much a gesture which can be either to trace the sheet, to tear the paper, to take notes, to turn on a camera, or to do nothing. And it is a process of forgetting and remembering, of making and unmaking as far as possible, of returning to a sheet already filled up before, of repeating again something made in another context, of superimposing another layer.
