Praia Falha
Gonçalo Sena

Opening: 10 March, 4 pm

Praia Falha is the second solo exhibition by Gonçalo Sena at Galeria Quadrado Azul presenting a new group of sculptures. Framed by the subjective landscape suggested by the two words in the exhibition's title,* the works are in a transformation and redefinition process until the day before the opening, taking the exhibition event as a suspension in time of this process, crystallized in the spacial composition drawn by the sculptural elements in the gallery's architecture.

In Praia Falha, Sena proposes a sculptural vocabulary of shapes, scales and materials – the result from a dialogue between geometric and organic shapes, method and accident, accuracy and amateurism – eventually translated into sculptural assemblages that, just like words in a sentence, take a temporary place in space, enabling their reading and perception. This vocabulary consists of resin casts made from architectonic fragments in wood, concave shapes made of concrete and polyurethane simulating hybrid porous structures, found objects, among others.

Using drawing as a starting point, Sena's practice is mainly sculptural. Adhering closely to materials’ tactile identity and visual qualities, his work often concerns topics such as fragmented narratives, language structures in relation to materiality and spatial renegotiation. Sena's recent works explore encounters between hybrid non-functional concrete structures, everyday objects and organic materials. Using the exhibition format as a temporary publication, bodily and visual shifts of perception are further investigated. Through assembling and reassembling in space, the architectural environment becomes mutable and displaced.
